Built in the 9th century to honour the Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer), Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia. The temple compound consists of 224 temples, with 16 of them located in the central courtyard. Most of the remaining 208 structures are small shrines which face all four cardinal directions. Shiva Temple, located in the immediate center, is regarded as the highest temple in Indonesia with a height of 47 meters.
