About this Place Of Interest

Sitting on the northern bank of the Mekong river, My Tho became a refuge in the 1680’s for Chinese refugees fleeing their homeland after being defeated by the Manchurians. In the 1860’s, the French colonial campaign towards Vietnam made My Tho a major strategic city alongside Saigon. The economy continued to bloom under French rule, which encouraged the immigration of people mainly from Minnan and Teo Chew in China. In 1876, My Tho was established as one of the 6 provinces in southeast Vietnam. Today, the economy of My Tho is dependent on tourism and agriculture carried out in Thoi Son island. Due to its location in the Mekong Delta, Thoi Son island is an excellent spot for the cultivation of rice, coconuts, mangoes and longans. It is also the main market that deals in Mekong river fishes. It is definitely a great place to visit to understand how plantations can improve the economy of a nation.
