About this Learning Experience

Thean Hou Temple, one of Southeast Asia’s oldest and largest temples, was built in 1894 by the Hainanese community in Kuala Lumpur in order to worship Tian Hou, the Goddess of the Heavens. Since its official opening in 1989, it has welcomed worshippers and tourists from all around the world. Apart from Thean Hou, devotees also come to worship Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, and Mazu, the Goddess of the Waterfront. In this lesson, you will learn about how to explore themes in legends by looking at specific literary devices such as symbols and setting. In particular, you will focus on exploring the legends of Mazu and Guan Yin, and about their relevance in the Chinese culture.
