A brand that is recognised worldwide, Royal Selangor was founded in 1885 by a young entrepreneur named Yong Koon from Shantou, China. At that time, Yong ran a small business making simple household items made of tin. His experimental nature led him to produce home ware made of pewter, making him one of the first pewtersmiths in Kuala Lumpur. His business took a blow in the 1930’s due to World War I. So he turned his focus to the British and other expatriates. Thus, began a new phase for his business. Yong started making European-style products, like teapots and candelabras, which earned him sufficient funds to move into his own shop lot at Pudu Road.
