About this Place Of Interest

The Singapore Zoo which was formerly known as the Singapore zoological gardens is located in the Mandai district and has been voted to be the world’s best rainforest zoo. The zoo was established in 1973 and has been a great attraction ever since. The 26 hectares secondary forest supports about 2800 animals of over 300 species, of which about 26% are endangered. There is an exotic mix of animals that hail from Australia, Germany, China and India that can be found in the zoo. It is renowned for it’s “open zoo” concept.[1] Though the animals are located separately especially from their predators, there is no physical barriers that are made from glass or fences instead the barriers consist of lush vegetation and cascading water. The Singapore zoo has achieved a number of notable success in its captive breeding programme such as the birth of a baby orangutan which is quite a rare event.
